Produced from 1990-1998, the Ultra model was the creme de la creme of the Strat Plus series, featuring an HSS array of Fender Lace Sensor pickups, an Wilkinson roller nut, two-point tremolo system, and Sperzel locking tuners. The pickup compliment includes a Lace Sensor Red humbucker in the bridge position, Silver middle position single coil, and Blue neck position single coil. As with all Lace products, these pickups feature a unique radiant Field Barrier system that surrounds both the coil and magnets, reducing 60-cycle hum. The patented Lace Micro Combs replace traditional bobbins, giving the player a wider tonal range and better string balance than traditional pickups.
Additionally, the Ultra control configuration features a center-detented TBX Tone control, a three-way Dual Sensor mini toggle, and a standard five-way pickup selector switch.
The maple neck features a slender, fast-feeling C-shaped profile carve offering modest shoulder and sparingly little taper as you travel up the 22 fret slab ebony fretboard, measuring .830” deep at the 1st fret and .890” at the 12th.
The fretboard is a thick slab of ebony, featuring abalone dot inlay and stock medium jumbo frets which retain their full factory height, showing only very light wear on the crowns of frets 1-4 and virtually no wear further up the board. The scale length is 25 1/2“, while the Wilkinson nut measures 1 5/8“ in width. On the headstock, the Sperzel locking tuning machines hold pitch extremely well as per their design, even with liberal use of the two-point vibrato.
All of the electronics function as intended, with a five-way pickup selector switch, Master Volume control, Tone control, Dual Sensor three-way mini toggle, and a center-detent stacked TBX Tone pot. The locking two-point vibrato has a very smooth and responsive feel, and works in concert with the roller nut and locking tuners.
The Fender Ultra branded neck plate features a micro tilt adjustment. The alder body is capped with bookmatched curly flame maple on both the top and back, finished in gloss Ebony Frost and accented by a lightly aged multi-ply white pearloid pickguard.
